He reflects on San Francisco mayors, politics, populace, tourism, the waterfront, and its architectural environment. He speaks of dozens of newspapers, including the Bay Guardian, the Newhall Signal and the Santa Clarita Valley Citizen. In addition, he discusses his background, education, travels, the Newhall family and business, the Newhall Land and Farming Company. The volume also contains a 1967 interview with his wife, Ruth Waldo Newhall, and a joint conversation with Ben Bagdikian, emeritus dean, UC School of Journalism
